What are RTM rules? How will the IPL auction be used; Know
Before IPL 2025, many important rules have been announced regarding the mega auction, which also includes the option of RTM card. The IPL Governing Council said that each franchise can retain 6 players through retention or RTM. However, of these, 5 can be retained through Direct Retention and 1 through RTM. The RTM rule is not new in the mega auction but it was removed before the mega auction held in the 2022 season. However, now he has returned once again.
What is RTM?
RTM stands for Right to Match Card, it is an option that is given to the franchises at the table during the auction. This card allows the franchise to use additional retention spots and contract a player from the other team at the same price as the former team. This option was last used in the mega auction of players before the 2018 IPL.
If a franchise retains six players (5 capped and 1 uncapped) then it will not get a single RTM in the mega auction. Whereas, if it retains only five players (4 capped and 1 uncapped) then it will get RTM card. This way, if fewer players than the set limit are retained, you can get more RTM.
How will RTM be used in the IPL 2025 mega auction?
This time there has been a twist in the mega auction regarding RTM. Under this, if any franchise uses RTM this time, then the team making the highest bid for that player will be given another chance. If the team increases the bid, the franchise using RTM will have to pay the same amount. We try to explain this to you through a simple example.
Example: If Tushar Deshpande is being auctioned and Royal Challengers Bangalore have made the highest bid of Rs. In the bid of Rs 6 crore, Chennai Super Kings (Tushar's current franchise) will first be asked if they want to use their RTM. If CSK uses the RTM, RCB will be given another chance to raise the amount and place the final bid. If RCB Rs. 9 crore final bid then CSK can use their RTM and Rs. Tushar can be re-signed for Rs 9 crore.
