The tenure of Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid will end after the T20 World Cup 2024. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also invited applications for the post of head coach. Rahul Dravid can also apply again for this post. Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir tops the BCCI list to take over as the head coach of the men's team. According to a report, Gambhir, who is currently the mentor of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, has been approached by the BCCI to gauge his interest for the head coach position. The last date to apply for this post is 27th May.

Gautam Gambhir does not have any coaching experience at international and domestic level. He has been in charge of the coaching staff in the IPL franchise. He was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023. He joined Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2024. KKR's performance this season has been excellent. The team has won 9 out of 13 matches and lost 3. 1 match has also been inconclusive. The team is on top in the points table with 19 points.

Gambhir was part of the Indian team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup. In the 2011 World Cup final, he played a match-winning inning of 97 runs in 122 balls. He also hit 9 fours in this innings. Gautam Gambhir led KKR for 7 IPL seasons from 2011 to 2017 and qualified for the playoffs 5 times. Under the captaincy of Gambhir, Kolkata Knight Riders also won the IPL title twice in 2012 and 2014.
