Pakistan's newly appointed head coach Gary Kirsten wants his team to win at least one trophy out of the three ICC tournaments in the next three years. Apart from the T20 World Cup in June this year, Kirsten will be seen coaching the Pakistan team in the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026. Kirsten, who was the head coach of India's World Cup (2011) winning team, wants Babar Azam and his team to win at least one of these three tournaments.
Kirsten is the head coach of Pakistan in ODI-T20.
Kirsten, who currently mentors IPL team Gujarat Titans, was on Sunday appointed the head coach of Pakistan for ODIs and T20 Internationals. It is expected that the former South African batsman will take up his new responsibilities from May 22 before Pakistan's tour of England. When Kirsten was asked about her goals during her tenure, she said – If you can win even one of those three ICC tournaments, that would be a great achievement. Be it the upcoming T20 World Cup or any other ICC tournament.
'The team should perform its best'
He said, 'My job is to ensure that the team performs at its best. If the team gives its best performance then we will always have a good chance of winning the trophy. So it will be really important for me to understand where the teams are right now and what the teams need to do to compete at the top.
Now less time is left in preparations for T20 World Cup
According to Kirsten, Pakistan has one of the top four to five coaching positions at the international level and the offer of working with some of the best cricketers in the world was attractive to her. Kirsten also admitted that he has less time to prepare for the T20 World Cup to be held in West Indies and USA in June as he has to fulfill his responsibilities in the IPL. Azhar Mahmood is doing a good job as the interim head coach.
