According to 22.1.2 of the MCC, cricket's law-making body, unless the ball is within the reach of the batsman, it will be declared wide with the bat with a normal cricket stroke. According to Rule 22.4.1, if the batsman brings the ball within enough reach to be hit by a normal cricket stroke then it will not be considered wide. The umpire gave a wide to Mohit Sharma because Sanju Samson could not reach the ball. That means they were not in a position to play it. They were far away from this. In such a situation, he was declared wide.
